Missing Dog Found 1,000 Miles From Home, Reunited With Owner

A missing dog turned up more than 1,000 miles from home, creating an unexpected reunion between a 10-year-old Border Collie and his owner. Rio was found in Greensboro, North Carolina, after disappearing from Oklahoma at the end of July.

The Guilford County Animal Shelter in Greensboro took Rio in last week. Staff scanned him for a microchip and discovered that his owner lived in Oklahoma.

According to an Aug. 16 social media post from the shelter, Rio’s owner said she had been “checking everywhere” since he went missing. She also described him as “an elaborate escape artist who tends to bolt when he gets scared.”

How Rio traveled from Oklahoma to North Carolina remains unclear. Still, the distance did not stop his owner from getting to him. She took the first available flight to Greensboro, where she was finally reunited with her dog.

The shelter shared its relief in the post, writing, “We’re so happy this story ended with Rio back where he belongs.”

Rio Returns Home

After the reunion, Rio traveled back to Oklahoma with his owner. He was also reunited with his sister, a 9-month-old puppy.

The case drew widespread attention online. The shelter’s Facebook post received more than 5,000 reactions, over 200 comments, and more than 500 shares. It was also viewed nearly 175,000 times.

The shelter used Rio’s case to highlight why pet microchips matter. A collar can come off, while a microchip can provide shelters and animal control officers with a reliable way to identify a lost pet and contact its family.

Rio’s long journey shows how far a lost pet can travel. Keeping a microchip registered with current owner information can make reunification much easier when a pet is found far from home.

Rio’s return to Oklahoma brought an unexpected journey to a happy close. After being missing for weeks and ending up across the country, the Border Collie is back with his owner and his young sister.
